Promoter and Chief Convener, National Opposition Movement
Nigeria’s journey with democracy, which began in 1999, has seen significant milestones. We have witnessed the growth of a multi-party system and the historic transfer of power between political parties in 2015. However, despite these achievements, the enthusiasm of our citizens has waned, with each election cycle proving to be worse than the last. Voter turnout has been on a downward spiral, signaling a growing disillusionment with the electoral process.
This regression has been fueled by several factors:
- Loss of Ideological Distinction: Political parties no longer represent clear ideological values. Elections have become less about principles and more about personalities and, tragically, the highest bidder.
- Erosion of Electoral Integrity: While the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has improved its guidelines and operational framework, transparency and trust in the electoral process have deteriorated.
- Judicial Challenges: Our judiciary, meant to safeguard democracy, has experienced a worrying decline in integrity, leaving the country vulnerable to unchecked power.
- Threats of Violence and Thuggery: Non-state actors and violence have increasingly marred our democratic processes.
Why We Exist
The National Opposition Movement Coalition has been born out of a necessity to rescue Nigeria’s democracy from the dangers that loom. Respect for party supremacy is at an all-time low, and the lack of a viable opposition to hold the government accountable is glaring.
This movement, christened “The Alternative,” aims to provide a platform for meaningful engagement with stakeholders, including political actors, civil society, academia, the media, and democratic institutions at home and abroad.
Unlike a political party, our focus is not on contesting elections but on fostering a robust opposition to guide and educate Nigerians.
Our Mission
- Advocacy and Education: We will enlighten citizens about the critical connection between democracy, electoral outcomes, and their everyday lives.
- Vote Trading Eradication: Through reorientation and advocacy, we will combat the culture of trading votes for tokens, highlighting its detrimental consequences.
- Accountability: We will challenge individuals of questionable wealth and ensure that those who steal public funds are not allowed to manipulate our democracy.
A Call for Orderly Opposition
While our movement seeks to challenge the status quo, we will not resort to chaos or mob action. Nigeria’s democracy must be safeguarded from manipulation and crises fueled by unscrupulous individuals.
We acknowledge the trust deficit in the country and the sacrifices this task demands. Nevertheless, we are committed to this noble cause, knowing that the future of our democracy depends on it.
Join Us
The march has begun, and we extend our hands in partnership to all Nigerians who desire a vibrant opposition and a transparent, credible democratic process. Together, we can secure the future of our democracy.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
